Horse Lake Bridge Replacement
HORSE LAKE BRIDGE REPLACEMENT FAQ’s – April 10th, 2025
Why is the bridge being replaced?
The Sawmill Creek bridge, now known as the Horse Lake Road Bridge, was constructed in 1949 and was originally an asset under the Ministry of Transportation’s jurisdiction. In 1991 the roadway changed classification, and Horse Lake Road and the bridge were transferred to the care of the District. A formal condition assessment of the bridge structure was completed in 2014 and identified that the condition of the timber substructure was in less than satisfactory condition. It was recommended that for long term serviceability, the existing timber bridge structure be replaced with a modern steel and concrete structure. Load restrictions were put into place to extend the life of the existing structure until it could be replaced.
How is the District paying for the bridge replacement?
The District received a grant from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) – Rural and Northern Communities Program for $1,748,000. The remainder will be funded through a combination of development cost charge reserves and community forest reserves.

The bridge project is expected to be completed and fully operational in 2026.
Will the road be closed during construction?
No. A temporary two-lane bridge will be installed to provide traffic flow along Horse Lake Road during the removal and construction phases. There will be brief closures from time to time to accommodate construction. The contractor has a traffic control plan in place to minimize disruption and ensure that traffic travelling Horse Lake Road is accommodated.
